Advanced Qur’anic Studies
and Tafsir (MAIS-601)

Course Description: In this course, we aim to expose our students to the traditional sciences of ulum al-Quran and tafsir, along with introducing them to some of the most prominent theories in the Western Academy on these subjects. To this end, we shall pay attention to traditionalist and academic scholarship regarding the context of the revelation of the Quran, the history of the Quran and its preservation via the Uthmanic recension and the early manuscripts (including the San’a palimpsests), its transmission and recitation (including the issue of ahruf and qira’at), and the primary schools of interpretation.

Hybrid Course: 10 online sessions and two intensive weekends:

  • September 20th: 5 PM – 9 PM
  • September 21st: 8 AM – 4 PM
  • December 6th: 5 PM – 9 PM
  • December 7th: 8 AM – 4 PM
