Shura Conference Call for Proposals

SHURA CONFERENCE CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Sacred Activism:
Islam & Cross-Cultural Competency

The Association of Muslim Chaplains and The Islamic Seminary of America, in cooperation with the Muslim Endorsement Council of Connecticut are pleased to announce a call for proposals for the 10th National Shura & In-Service Training for Chaplains, Imams, and other Service Providers to be held March 21, 2020 at Yale University in New Haven, CT. Mindful of God’s teaching not to allow hate to deter us from being just, this year we seek to further develop capacity within the American Muslim leadership to address cross-cultural issues internally and externally and particularly in regard to prejudice. To this end, we are seeking:

Workshops
Paper presentations
Book talks
Panel programs
Research posters

that address the conference theme as well as others relevant to Islamic chaplaincy, Muslim mental health, and American Muslim leadership. We are especially interested in proposals that address:

Cross-Cultural competency for working within the Muslim community
Cross-Cultural competency for Muslims providing care for those of other faiths
Self-care for leaders and care providers
Prejudice and/or division within the Muslim community
Healing women’s relationship with the masjid/Islam
Responding to Islamophobia
Disaster chaplaincy vis-a-vis violence in the community
Care for those impacted by immigration laws, disaster, gun violence, or sexual assault
Supporting economically distressed communities
Cultivating Prophetic compassionate care for all
Support & professional development for women in leadership and community service positions
Reinforcing ethically-based leadership and service

We are looking for presenters who have solidly developed their topic area, are able to inform a diverse audience and deliver insightful engaging presentations. We particularly welcome presentations relevant for seasoned providers that can provide a depth of thought while also remaining accessible to students in the field. Please contact us if you have a topic that you’d like to explore submitting that falls outside of the theme.

Submission of Presentations
All proposed presentations are to be submitted via email with the subject line “Shura 1441 Proposal” by November 30, 2019. Submissions should be sent to registrar.isf@gmail.com and communications@AssociationOfMuslimChaplains.org. Include the following in Microsoft Word format:

  • Name of Presenter(s)
  • Company/Institution
  • Address
  • Email
  • Web URL
  • Phone Number
  • A 50-100 word bio for each presenter
  • Headshot (optional) for each presenter sent as jpeg, tif, gif, or bmp
  • Session title and a maximum 100-word description of the presentation/posters
  • A list of resources and/or bibliography, if appropriate
  • Target skill level of audience (beginning, intermediate, advanced) for presentations
  • AV needs (i.e. PowerPoint, audio, video, etc.)

Considerations
All presenters agree to participate at their own expense, though the conference fee is waived. If needed, financial support for travel is available for presenters (not posterers) as well as hotel accommodation for one night. As this assistance will likely not cover all of your costs, please take this into consideration before submitting it. Those displaying posters will need to have their own stand and set up and remove their poster from the designated location personally.

Session slots are 90 minutes (including time for questions). You may be asked to present as part of a 2 or 3 person panel. Limited consideration will also be given for a two session workshop model. Posters will be on display throughout the day without designated presentation time. If you have PowerPoint, please be prepared to either forward it in advance and/or have saved or a flash drive. Presenters are encouraged to use their own laptops when possible.

Please indicate if you have a preference for presenting in the morning or afternoon due to travel schedules.

Proposals must be received by November 30, 2019, a notice of acceptance or rejection will be made no later than December 31st, 2019.
